What is the best time of year to fish in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

The best fishing is from October through March, during the cooler post-monsoon and north-east monsoon months. October marks the start of the peak season for species like giant trevally, mahi-mahi, bluefin trevally, mangrove jack and grouper. Avoid the annual fishing ban for mechanised boats from 15 April to 14 June, which protects breeding stocks.

What species can I catch around Port Blair in October?

October is excellent for giant trevally, bluefin trevally, mahi-mahi, pickhandle barracuda, mangrove jack, orange-spotted grouper, Indo-Pacific tarpon, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and red snapper. Reef species are peaking as the water clears post-monsoon, and offshore pelagics are starting their peak season. The activity model for late October shows high activity for mahi-mahi, GT, bluefin trevally and barracuda.

Are there any protected fish species in the Andaman Islands?

Yes, many species are fully protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus), sea turtles, dugongs and corals must not be targeted or kept. The 2022 amendment added several sharks, rays, wedgefishes and devil rays to the protected list. Release any protected species immediately if caught by accident.

Do I need a fishing permit for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

Recreational fishing rules and permit requirements can vary, and some areas (especially marine protected areas and tribal reserves) may have restrictions. Check with the local fisheries department or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration before you fish. The annual fishing ban from 15 April to 14 June applies to all mechanised and motorised boats.

What tackle do I need for giant trevally fishing in the Andaman Islands?

Giant trevally demand heavy tackle. Use a heavy spinning or baitcasting outfit rated for PE 4–8 line (roughly 30–80 lb), with a strong 60–100 lb fluorocarbon or wire leader. Poppers and stickbaits in the 80–200 g range work well. A solid drag, strong hooks and a good-quality reel with a high line capacity are essential — GT make brutal, unstoppable runs into the reef.

Is it safe to fish alone in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

No, it is not safe to fish alone, especially offshore or in remote areas. The islands are isolated, the sea can be unpredictable, and help is far away. Always fish with a buddy or hire a local guide with a boat. Carry a VHF radio, GPS, first-aid kit, plenty of water and sun protection, and let someone on shore know your plan and expected return time.
