What is the best month for fishing in Andhra Pradesh?

October to March is the best period for coastal and estuarine fishing in Andhra Pradesh. October marks the start of the peak season as the monsoon recedes, water clears and temperatures become more comfortable. Most predators like barramundi, queenfish, grouper and threadfin are at their peak from October through to March. Avoid the 15 April to 14 June fishing ban for mechanised boats, and the mid-monsoon months when estuaries are flooded and turbid.

Where can I fish in Visakhapatnam?

The Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour breakwater is the most accessible spot, offering deep water and structure for grouper, barracuda, queenfish, giant trevally and sea bream. Public areas near the harbour are open, but port zones are restricted. This is a working harbour, so stay clear of boats and nets, and check local rules or permits before fishing. Other options include nearby beaches and estuaries, though access and conditions vary.

Is there a fishing ban in Andhra Pradesh?

Yes. Mechanised and motorised fishing boats may not fish at sea off Andhra Pradesh from 15 April to 14 June each year during the 61-day breeding-season ban. Recreational anglers fishing from shore are generally not covered by this ban, but check local by-laws. Many marine species are also protected year-round under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, including whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper and several sharks and rays.

What fish can I catch in Andhra Pradesh in October?

October is peak season for Nile tilapia, barramundi, queenfish, orange-spotted grouper, fourfinger threadfin, mullet, magur catfish, pearlspot and freshwater eel. Coastal and estuarine predators like barramundi, queenfish and grouper are at the start or end of their peak run as the water clears after the monsoon. Tilapia are active year-round in warm ponds and backwaters. Fish the tide change at dawn or evening for the best results.

Do I need a fishing licence in Andhra Pradesh?

Recreational fishing from public beaches and harbours generally does not require a licence in Andhra Pradesh, but some areas — especially wildlife sanctuaries, protected mangrove zones and certain estuaries — may have restrictions or require permits. Check with the state fisheries department or local authorities before fishing in protected areas. Commercial fishing and the use of nets or traps always require a licence.

What are the protected fish species in Andhra Pradesh?

Whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles, dugongs and corals are fully protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act. Several other sharks, rays, wedgefishes and devil rays were added in the 2022 amendment. Release all protected species immediately and unharmed. If you are unsure whether a shark, ray or grouper is protected, release it. Eel populations are also declining — consider releasing them.
