What is the best time of year to fish in Assam?

October to March is the best period. The monsoon (June–September) brings floods and muddy water, making fishing difficult. Post-monsoon and winter months offer clearer water, comfortable temperatures and active feeding. October marks the start of the peak season for rohu, catla, mrigal, snakehead and catfish.

Can I fish for mahseer in Assam?

Yes, but with strict rules. Golden mahseer are listed as Endangered and must be caught and released with barbless hooks. Many rivers require a permit from the State Fisheries or Forest Department, and some are closed to angling. Always check local rules before targeting mahseer, and handle fish gently in the water.

Do I need a fishing permit in Assam?

Yes, for most public waters. Angling in reservoirs, dams and many rivers requires a permit or licence from the Assam State Fisheries Department or the water's owner or lessee. Private ponds and beels also need permission from the owner. Check locally for the latest rules and fees.

Where can I fish near Guwahati?

The Brahmaputra River around Guwahati offers excellent fishing for rohu, catla, snakehead, wallago and catfish. Look for slower water near the banks and where tributaries join. Deepor Beel (a Ramsar wetland) has strict rules; other beels and ponds in the area may be open with permission. Hiring a local guide is recommended.

What fish can I catch in Assam in October?

October is peak season for giant snakehead, wallago catfish and magur (walking catfish). Rohu, catla, mrigal, freshwater eel and golden mahseer are also active. The post-monsoon period offers some of the year's best fishing, with clearing water and comfortable temperatures around 27°C.

Is it safe to fish in the Brahmaputra River?

The Brahmaputra is a large, powerful river with strong currents, shifting sandbars and changing water levels. Always wear a life jacket in a boat, check the weather forecast, and avoid fishing alone. Boats must be registered and carry safety equipment. Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended, especially if you are unfamiliar with the river.
