What is the best fish for a beginner to catch in Tamil Nadu?

Nile tilapia (திலேப்பியா) is the perfect first fish. It is common in ponds, lakes and backwaters across Tamil Nadu, takes simple baits like bread or earthworms, and is active year-round. October is peak season, and tilapia are rated difficulty 1 out of 3, making them ideal for learning the basics of casting, bite detection and fish handling.

Do I need a fishing licence to fish in Tamil Nadu?

Recreational fishing licences are not widely required for shore-based angling in Tamil Nadu, but rules vary by location. Some backwaters, reservoirs and protected areas may require a permit. Always check with the local fisheries department or forest department before fishing, especially in or near sanctuaries like parts of Pulicat Lake.

When is the fishing ban in Tamil Nadu?

The annual east coast fishing ban runs from 15 April to 14 June each year. During this 61-day period, mechanised and motorised fishing boats may not fish at sea off Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states to protect breeding stocks. The ban does not typically apply to shore-based recreational anglers, but always check local rules. October is well outside the ban period.

Which fish are protected and cannot be caught in Tamil Nadu?

Whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles, dugongs and corals are fully protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Many sharks, rays, wedgefishes and devil rays were added in 2022. If you catch a protected species, release it immediately and never land, sell or keep any part. Check the latest schedules or ask locally if you are unsure about a species.

What tackle do I need to start fishing in Tamil Nadu?

For pond and backwater fishing (tilapia, mullet, pearlspot), a 6–8 foot light spinning rod, small reel, 4–6 lb line, size 8–12 hooks, split-shot sinkers and floats are enough. For beach or estuary fishing (queenfish, threadfin), use a 7–9 foot medium-light rod, 8–12 lb line, small metal lures and a running sinker rig. Carry bread, earthworms, dough or fresh prawn for bait, plus pliers, a towel, hat, sunscreen and water.

Is October a good month to start fishing in Tamil Nadu?
