What fish are biting in Hyderabad in October?

October is peak season for Nile tilapia, giant snakehead, pearlspot and wallago catfish in Hyderabad. Rohu, catla, common carp and grass carp are entering their peak season as cooler weather begins. Magur (walking catfish) and mrigal are also active. Water temperatures around 26.5°C and post-monsoon clarity make October one of the best months for freshwater fishing in the region.

Where can I fish in Hyderabad?

Hussain Sagar is the most accessible spot, with banks at Tank Bund and Necklace Road. Tilapia, catfish and murrel are reported, but the lake is heavily polluted — catch and release only, and do not eat fish from here. For cleaner water, explore smaller tanks, farm ponds and reservoirs around Hyderabad. Many require a permit from the State Fisheries Department or the water's owner, so check access rules before you fish.

What bait works best for carp in Hyderabad in October?

For rohu, use atta or maida dough balls with a pinch of hing (asafoetida), boiled rice grains or earthworm. For catla, use floating dough (atta), bread paste or soft pellets fished in the top 1–2 feet. For common carp, sweet corn, dough with honey or jaggery, boilies or earthworm on a hair rig work well. Pre-baiting your swim with groundbait (bran, rice, oil-cake) will concentrate fish and improve your catch rate.

Do I need a fishing permit in Hyderabad?

Yes, angling in reservoirs, dams and many rivers in Telangana requires a permit or angling licence from the State Fisheries Department or the water's owner. Some private ponds and tanks may also require permission. Always check local rules before fishing. Fishing inside National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Tiger Reserves is not allowed without written permission.

Is it safe to eat fish from Hussain Sagar?

No. Hussain Sagar is heavily polluted, and we do not recommend eating fish caught there. Practise catch and release only. For cleaner water and safer fish, explore tanks and reservoirs outside the city centre. When in doubt about water quality, always release your catch.

What is the best time of day to fish in Hyderabad in October?

Dawn and evening are the most productive times for most species. Rohu, catla, common carp, tilapia, giant snakehead and grass carp all feed actively in low light. Catfish (magur and wallago) are best targeted in the evening and at night. Arrive early, fish the margins and weed beds, and stay quiet for the best results.
