What is the best all-round fishing rod for a beginner in India?

A 7 to 8 foot medium-power spinning rod with a 3000 or 4000 size spinning reel covers ponds, lakes, rivers, jetties and calm estuaries. It is the most versatile single outfit you can buy.

Should a beginner use braid or monofilament?

Monofilament is cheaper, more forgiving and easier to knot, so it is the better choice for your very first outfit. Move to braid with a mono or fluorocarbon leader when you start lure fishing or need longer casts.

How much should I spend on my first rod and reel?

Roughly ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 buys a decent starter combo from a known brand. Very cheap combos often have weak reels that fail quickly in salt water, while expensive gear is wasted until you know what kind of fishing you enjoy.

Do I need a baitcasting reel?

Not to start. Baitcasters are excellent for heavy lure fishing but they take practice and tangle easily. A spinning reel is far easier for beginners.
