What should I check before fishing on the coast in India?

Check the IMD weather forecast and warnings, INCOIS ocean state forecasts and high wave alerts, and the local tide times. Do not fish rocks, breakwaters or open beaches during warnings, cyclones or rough monsoon seas.

How do I remove a fish hook from my skin?

For a shallow hook, the string-pull method or pushing the point through and cutting off the barb can work. Do not try to remove hooks from the eye, face, neck, joints or deep in the body; cover and see a doctor. Clean the wound and get a tetanus booster if needed.

What should I do if I am bitten by a snake while fishing?

Stay calm and still, keep the bitten limb immobile and below heart level, remove rings and tight items, and get to a hospital with antivenom as fast as possible. Do not cut, suck or tie a tight tourniquet.

Do I need a life jacket for fishing?

Always wear one on a boat or kayak, and it is strongly recommended on rocks, breakwaters and steep riverbanks. A properly fitted life jacket keeps you afloat if you fall in, and many drownings happen to people who never planned to go in the water.
