What is the strongest knot for tying a hook?

The palomar is one of the strongest and easiest hook knots, and it works with mono, fluorocarbon and braid. The uni knot is almost as strong and works on any line.

Which knot should I use to join braid to a leader?

The FG knot is the slimmest and strongest braid-to-leader join and passes smoothly through rod guides. The Albright is easier to learn and is a good choice while you practise the FG.

Why do I need to wet a knot before tightening?

Pulling a dry knot tight creates friction heat that weakens the line, especially with mono and fluorocarbon. A little water or saliva lets the turns slide into place without damage.

How long should I leave the tag end?

Trim the tag to about 2 to 3 mm after tightening. Too long and it catches weed; cut flush and a knot can slip open under load.
