What do fishing hook sizes mean?

Small hooks are numbered: the bigger the number, the smaller the hook, so a size 12 is smaller than a size 6. Above size 1 the scale switches to 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and so on, where the bigger number means a bigger hook.

How heavy should my sinker be?

Use the lightest sinker that holds your bait where you want it. In a pond a few split shots are enough. On a beach or in a river current you may need 20 to 60 g.

Which float should a beginner buy?

A few small waggler or stick floats for ponds, and a couple of bigger bubble or slider floats for windy days and the sea.
