What is karimeen in English?

Karimeen is the Malayalam name for the green chromide or pearlspot, Etroplus suratensis. It is Kerala's state fish and lives mainly in brackish backwaters, estuaries and connected fresh water.

What bait is best for karimeen?

Small natural baits work best: pieces of earthworm, small prawn or shrimp, and soft dough. Karimeen have small mouths, so keep the bait and hook small.

What size hook should I use for pearlspot?

Small hooks around sizes 12 to 16 suit most karimeen. A larger hook will often be nibbled around without the fish getting hooked.

When is the best time to fish for karimeen?

Early morning and late afternoon are usually best. Calm, clear conditions help, and many anglers find the water around the turn of the tide productive in tidal backwaters.
