What is the best time of year to fish the Kerala backwaters?

October to May is the best window. October marks the start of peak season as the monsoon clears, water temperatures stabilise around 28°C, and species like karimeen, barramundi and mangrove jack move into the shallows. Avoid June to September when the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain, rough seas and muddy water, and the 1 June to 31 July fishing ban restricts boat access.

Which fish can I catch in the Kerala backwaters in October?

October is peak or near-peak for pearlspot (karimeen), barramundi, mangrove jack, mullet, magur (walking catfish), tilapia, queenfish, grouper, sea bream, ladyfish and threadfin. Karimeen and barramundi are the most prized. Tilapia and mullet are easy targets for beginners. Fish the tide change at dawn or evening for the best action.

Do I need a fishing permit for the Kerala backwaters?

It depends on the spot. Some backwater areas, forest rivers (like Bhoothathankettu) and municipal lakes may require a permit from the local fisheries office, forest department or municipality. Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes are generally open, but always check local rules. Mahseer fishing in rivers requires a catch-and-release permit in most areas.

What are the fishing rules and bans in Kerala?

The west coast monsoon ban (1 June to 31 July) prohibits mechanised and motorised boats from fishing at sea. Kerala also bans trawling in territorial waters for about 52 days (around 9 June to 31 July) — verify dates locally. Protected species (whale sharks, sawfishes, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles, mahseer) must be released. Check with the Kerala Fisheries Department for current by-laws.

What is the best bait for karimeen (pearlspot)?

Karimeen prefer small hooks (size 8–12) baited with small prawns, dough made from rice or wheat flour, or tiny pieces of fish. They nibble delicately, so use light line and strike gently. Fish quietly near coconut-root banks, reeds and vegetated areas in the morning or evening for the best results.

Where are the best fishing spots in the Kerala backwaters?

Vembanad Lake (Kumarakom) is excellent for karimeen, barramundi and mullet; fish the coconut-root banks and reeds. Ashtamudi Lake (Kollam) has mangrove edges ideal for barramundi and mangrove jack. Fort Kochi Beach offers queenfish, threadfin and grouper at the harbour mouth. Bhoothathankettu (Periyar) has catfish and mahseer (catch and release only). Always check local rules and respect working fishers' nets.
