What is the best month for fishing in Madhya Pradesh?

October through March is the peak season for most species in Madhya Pradesh. October marks the start of the cooler months when rohu, catla, common carp, magur and eel feed actively. Water temperatures drop to around 26°C and rivers clear after the monsoon, making fish easier to locate and catch.

Do I need a permit to fish in Madhya Pradesh reservoirs?

Yes, angling in most reservoirs, dams and many rivers in Madhya Pradesh requires a permit or licence from the State Fisheries Department or the water's managing authority. Fees and application procedures vary by location, so check with the local fisheries office before your trip.

What fish can I catch in Madhya Pradesh in October?

October is peak season for rohu, catla, common carp, Nile tilapia, giant snakehead, wallago catfish, magur and freshwater eel. Striped murrel, mrigal and Deccan mahseer are also active. Rohu and catla are the most popular targets in ponds and reservoirs, while snakehead and wallago offer exciting predator fishing in rivers.

Can I keep mahseer in Madhya Pradesh?

No. Mahseer (all Tor species, including Deccan and golden mahseer) are threatened and must be released unharmed. In most rivers, angling for mahseer requires a special permit and strict catch-and-release rules apply. Always check local regulations and handle mahseer gently to ensure their survival.

What are the best baits for rohu and catla in Madhya Pradesh?

Rohu and catla respond well to dough baits made from wheat flour or atta, boilies, sweet corn and bread. Fish these baits under a float at dawn or evening in ponds, tanks and slow river sections. Use a 3–5 kg line and a size 6–10 hook, and be patient—carp can be wary in clear water.

Is it safe to fish in Madhya Pradesh rivers during the monsoon?

No. The monsoon (June–September) brings floods, fast currents and muddy water to Madhya Pradesh rivers, making fishing difficult and dangerous. Wait until October or later when water levels drop, rivers clear and fish move into predictable lies. Always check weather forecasts and avoid fishing during heavy rain or rising water.
