When is the fishing ban in India?

There is a seasonal ban on fishing by boats during the main breeding season, roughly June to July on the west coast and roughly mid-April to mid-June on the east coast. Exact dates and rules are set by the central and state governments and can change, so check with your state fisheries department.

Does the monsoon fishing ban apply to shore anglers?

The ban is mainly aimed at fishing boats, especially mechanised and motorised vessels. Rules for shore fishing vary by state and place, so check locally. Even where it is allowed, the sea is often too rough to fish safely.

Where can I check sea warnings before fishing?

The India Meteorological Department issues weather forecasts and warnings, including warnings for fishermen, and INCOIS issues ocean state forecasts and high wave alerts. Both are available through their official websites and apps, and are often reported in local news.

Is it safe to fish a river after heavy rain?

Usually not. Rivers can rise fast after rain upstream or a dam release, banks become unstable and the current is far stronger than it looks. Wait until the water drops and clears.
