When is the best time to fish in Mumbai?

October through March is the prime season for sea fishing in Mumbai, after the monsoon ban (1 June to 31 July) ends and the seas calm down. Dawn and evening sessions around the tide change are the most productive times of day. Freshwater fishing for tilapia and carp is good year-round, with peaks in the post-monsoon months of September to November.

What fish can I catch in Mumbai in October?

October is peak season for barramundi, queenfish, orange-spotted grouper, goldsilk sea bream, milkfish, mullet, fourfinger threadfin, John's snapper, giant trevally and seer fish in coastal and backwater areas. In freshwater lakes like Powai, Nile tilapia, rohu, catla and murrel are active. Most of these species are at or entering their peak runs, so expect good action through the winter months.

Is fishing allowed in Powai Lake?

Angling is allowed on certain permitted banks of Powai Lake, but some areas are closed to the public and the lake is home to mugger crocodiles, so safety and access rules are strict. You should check with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or local authorities for current permits and designated fishing zones before you visit. Always stay well back from the water's edge and never wade or swim.

What are the fishing rules and bans in Mumbai?

The west coast monsoon fishing ban runs from 1 June to 31 July each year, prohibiting mechanised and motorised boats from fishing at sea off Maharashtra. Shore-based angling is not covered by the ban, but always check local by-laws. Several species are fully protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, including whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles and dugongs — you must release these immediately if caught. Using explosives, poison or electric current to catch fish is illegal across India.

Where can I fish from the shore in Mumbai?

Bandra Bandstand rocks are a popular and accessible shore-fishing spot for grouper, sea bream, mullet and barracuda. Other options include harbour walls, jetties and estuary mouths where public access is allowed, though many commercial and naval areas are restricted. Always respect signage, fish on a rising tide, and leave before high water as rocks become slippery and can be cut off by the tide.

Are there crocodiles in Mumbai's lakes?

Yes, mugger crocodiles are present in Powai Lake and possibly other urban water bodies in Mumbai. You should stay well back from the water's edge, never wade or swim, and supervise children closely. Angling is permitted on designated banks, but always follow local safety advice and keep a safe distance from the shoreline.
