What is the best month for fishing in Odisha?

October to March is the peak season for most species in Odisha. October marks the start of the cooler post-monsoon period, when waters clear and barramundi, threadfin, mangrove jack, queenfish and grouper all enter their peak runs. Avoid mid-April to mid-June, when the annual east coast fishing ban is in force for mechanised and motorised boats.

Where can I fish in Odisha in October?

Chilika Lake at Satapada is the most famous spot, offering barramundi, threadfin, milkfish, mullet and mangrove jack in Asia's largest brackish lagoon. Gopalpur Beach near the old port is good for surf fishing at dawn for threadfin, queenfish and mullet. Estuaries, tidal creeks and river mouths along the 485-kilometre coastline also hold excellent fishing. Always check local rules and respect community fishing rights.

What fish can I catch in Odisha in October?

October is peak season for barramundi (bhetki), fourfinger threadfin (rawas), mangrove jack, queenfish, orange-spotted grouper (kalava), goldsilk sea bream, milkfish and mullet in the estuaries and coast. In freshwater ponds and rivers, Nile tilapia are active year-round, and magur (walking catfish) and freshwater eel enter their cooler-month peak. Pearlspot (karimeen) are also good in the brackish backwaters of Chilika.

Is there a fishing ban in Odisha in October?

No. The annual east coast fishing ban runs from 15 April to 14 June each year for mechanised and motorised boats. October is outside this period, so coastal and estuarine fishing is fully open. However, always check for any local or temporary restrictions, and be aware that October to December is cyclone season—check IMD warnings before going to sea.

Do I need a permit to fish on Chilika Lake?

Fishing on Chilika Lake is regulated, and local fishing communities have rights over many areas. It is best to check local rules at Satapada jetty or hire a local guide who knows the permitted zones and community customs. Irrawaddy dolphins live in the lake and are protected—keep your distance and respect sanctuary zones.

What are the protected fish species in Odisha?

Whale shark, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, many sharks and rays, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles (including Olive Ridley) and dugongs are all protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Release any of these species immediately if caught, and never keep, sell or harm them. Freshwater eel populations are also declining—consider releasing them.
