What fish can I catch in Thiruvananthapuram in October?

October is peak or near-peak season for barramundi (കാളാഞ്ചി), mangrove jack (ചെമ്പല്ലി), pearlspot / karimeen (കരിമീൻ), queenfish, orange-spotted grouper (കലവ), goldsilk sea bream, milkfish (പൂമീൻ), ladyfish, fourfinger threadfin (കാല), Nile tilapia (തിലാപ്പിയ) and mullet (കണമ്പ്). Magur (walking catfish) also enters its cooler-month peak. The post-monsoon season offers clear water and active feeding in both the backwaters and the sea.

Where are the best fishing spots in Thiruvananthapuram?

Vizhinjam Harbour Breakwater (about 17 km from the city) offers coastal fishing for grouper, sea bream, queenfish, barracuda and trevally from the rocks. Ashtamudi Lake near Kollam (about 63 km north) is a large, productive backwater system with karimeen, barramundi, mangrove jack and mullet. The network of canals, ponds and tidal creeks within and around Thiruvananthapuram also holds tilapia, karimeen and magur. Always check local access rules and any permit requirements before you fish.

What are the fishing rules and bans in Kerala?

The main rule is the west coast monsoon fishing ban from 1 June to 31 July, when mechanised and motorised boats may not fish at sea. Kerala also bans trawling in its territorial waters for about 52 days, usually around 9 June to 31 July — check with the Kerala Fisheries Department for exact dates. Many species are protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, including whale sharks, sawfishes, giant guitarfish, sea cucumbers, seahorses, giant grouper, sea turtles and most sharks and rays. Release all protected species immediately. Some backwater areas and harbours may require permits; check locally.

Is October a good time to fish in Thiruvananthapuram?

Yes, October is excellent. It marks the start of the post-monsoon season: the south-west monsoon has ended, the seas have settled, water is clearing and many species are entering their peak feeding months. Water temperatures are around 28°C in both the backwaters and the sea. The 61-day monsoon fishing ban (1 June to 31 July) is over, so boat access is restored. October to May is the main fishing window on Kerala's west coast.

What tackle and bait do I need for backwater fishing in Thiruvananthapuram?

A 6–7 ft medium spinning rod with 10–15 lb line covers most backwater fishing. Bring soft plastics, shallow-diving lures and poppers for barramundi and mangrove jack, plus bottom rigs and small hooks (size 8–12) for karimeen and tilapia. Fresh prawns, small live mullet, cut fish and squid work for predators; bread, boiled rice and worms are good for tilapia and karimeen. Fish the tide change (the hour either side of high or low) for the best results, and always carry a landing net and long-nose pliers.

Can I fish from the Vizhinjam breakwater?

Breakwater areas open to the public vary, so follow harbour signs and check local rules or permit requirements. Vizhinjam is a working fishing harbour — stay clear of boats, nets and commercial operations. The breakwater rocks are slippery and exposed to the swell; wear non-slip shoes, fish with a companion, and consider a life jacket if the sea is rough. Never turn your back on the waves. Best fished in the morning or evening on a calm day.
