Prepared baits are made for fish that feed by smell and taste: rohu, catla, mrigal, common carp, grass carp and tilapia in ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
Buying guide
Paste and dough
Dough and paste made from flour (atta) and other ingredients are long-standing carp baits in Indian ponds. They are moulded around a small hook or onto a coil feeder. Softer pastes release scent faster; firmer pastes stay on longer.
Pellets and boilies
Pellets are compressed feed that slowly breaks down and releases scent; they are used as hook bait and as loose feed. Boilies are boiled, round baits that resist small fish, usually fished on a hair rig so the hook point stays free. Choose sizes that match the fish you expect.
Groundbait
Groundbait (chum) is a crumbly mix thrown or fed into the swim to draw fish in and keep them there. Little and often works better than a large amount at once. Many commercial ponds limit how much groundbait you can use or which baits are allowed, so follow the pond's rules. Groundbait can be mixed with water from the swim until it holds together when squeezed and breaks up on the bottom.
Choosing and budget
Simple flour-based dough is inexpensive and catches plenty of fish. Commercial pastes, pellets and boilies add consistent flavours and sizes. Try a small pack first and keep what works in your water.
Storage
Keep dry pellets and groundbait mixes in airtight containers away from damp. Store made-up paste in the fridge and use it within a few days. Do not empty leftover groundbait into the water at the end of the day.

Common questions
What is the best bait for rohu, catla and mrigal?
Dough and paste baits, small pellets and groundbait are the usual choice for Indian major carps. Fish near the bottom or under a float and keep feeding a little groundbait.
What is a boilie?
A boilie is a round bait made from a paste that is boiled to form a hard skin. It resists small fish and is usually fished on a hair rig for carp.
Can I use groundbait at a commercial fishing pond?
Many ponds allow it with limits, and some ban certain baits. Ask the pond owner or check the pond's rules before you fish.
