Kayaks and small boats take you to water you cannot reach from the shore, from backwater channels to reservoirs and calm inshore seas. Safety comes first.
Buying guide
Choosing a fishing kayak
Sit-on-top kayaks are the usual choice for fishing: they are stable, self-draining and easy to get back on. Wider kayaks are more stable for standing and casting; longer kayaks are faster and track straighter. Check the weight capacity against you plus your gear. Pedal-drive kayaks leave your hands free; paddle kayaks are lighter and simpler.
Paddles, anchors and fittings
Paddle length depends on kayak width and your height; lighter shafts reduce fatigue on long days. A small folding anchor with an anchor trolley lets you hold position in current. Rod holders, a crate and leashes for paddle and rods keep gear on board.
Life jackets and safety
Always wear a life jacket or PFD, sized and fastened. Check the weather, tide and sea state before every trip, avoid the sea in monsoon conditions, and tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Carry a whistle, a light and a phone in a waterproof case. Registered fishing boats must carry life jackets for everyone on board.
Local rules
Some reservoirs, sanctuaries and stretches of backwater need permission for boats or kayaks, and fishing bans apply at sea during the monsoon. Check our fishing rules and your state page before you launch.
Budget and care
Entry-level kayaks are heavier and simpler; mid-range models add better seats, storage and fittings; premium kayaks are lighter, faster or pedal-driven. Rinse with fresh water after sea use, store out of the sun and check fittings regularly.

Common questions
Is kayak fishing safe in India?
It can be, with a well-fitted life jacket, calm conditions, local knowledge and a trip plan shared with someone ashore. Avoid rough seas and the monsoon season at sea.
Which kayak is best for fishing?
A wide, stable sit-on-top kayak with rod holders and enough weight capacity for you and your gear suits most anglers.
Do I need permission to kayak on a lake or backwater?
Some reservoirs, sanctuaries and private waters need permission. Ask the local authority or the owner before you launch.
