Line is the only link between you and the fish. The right type and strength makes casting easier, helps you feel bites and stops good fish from breaking off.
Buying guide
Monofilament
Nylon monofilament is affordable, easy to knot and stretches a little, which helps absorb sudden runs. It is the easiest line for beginners and works well for pond and bait fishing. It weakens with sunlight and age, so replace it at least once a season.
Braided line
Braid is much thinner than mono for the same strength and has almost no stretch, so you cast further and feel every touch. It is often rated by PE number as well as pounds or kilograms. Braid is visible in clear water and can be cut by teeth, rocks and shells, so it is used with a leader.
Fluorocarbon and leaders
Fluorocarbon is harder to see underwater, resists abrasion and sinks, which makes it the usual leader material. A leader is a short length of stronger or tougher line tied to the end of your main line. Around rocks, oyster beds and mangroves use a heavier leader; for toothy fish such as seer fish, barracuda and ribbonfish, many anglers use a short wire trace.
Choosing strength
Match the line to the rating printed on your rod and to the size of fish you expect. Light pond fishing needs far less strength than casting lures for trevally or queenfish. Compare diameter as well as breaking strain: a thinner line casts further but has less abrasion resistance. Fill the reel spool almost to the lip, not over it.
Knots and care
Learn one reliable knot for hooks and swivels and one for joining braid to leader, and wet knots before tightening. Store spare line away from sun and heat. Check the last few metres for nicks after every fish and cut off damaged line.

Common questions
Which fishing line is best for beginners?
Monofilament. It is affordable, easy to tie and forgiving because it stretches. Move to braid with a leader once you start lure fishing or need longer casts.
Do I need a leader with braided line?
Usually yes. Braid is visible and cuts easily on rocks and teeth. A fluorocarbon or mono leader, or a wire trace for toothy fish, protects the end of the line.
How often should I change my fishing line?
Replace monofilament at least once a season, sooner if it is kinked or chalky. Braid lasts longer; cut off the worn front section and turn it around on the spool when it gets short.
