Fishing reels online in India

The reel stores your line, sets the drag that tires a fish and decides how smoothly you retrieve. Choosing the right size for your rod and target fish matters more than any single feature.

Buying guide

Types of reel

Spinning reels are the easiest to use and the most common choice in India, from ponds to piers. Baitcasting reels give better control and casting accuracy with heavier lures, but need practice to avoid tangles (backlash); their brakes help. Surf and long-cast reels have large, shallow spools for distance. Conventional and trolling reels with lever drags are built for big fish from boats.

Reel size

Spinning reels are sized by number. As a rough guide, 1000 to 2500 suits light freshwater fishing, 3000 to 4000 covers lure fishing in lakes and backwaters, 5000 to 6000 suits light saltwater and surf, and 8000 and above is for large trevally, tuna and other strong sea fish. Check the line capacity printed on the spool and match the reel to the line rating of your rod.

Drag, gear ratio and bearings

Drag lets a fish pull line without breaking it; a smooth drag matters more than a high maximum figure. Gear ratio sets how much line comes in per turn: higher ratios suit fast lure work, lower ratios give more winding power. Bearing count alone says little; build quality and sealing count for more.

Saltwater use and budget

For the sea and backwaters, choose reels described as saltwater-ready or sealed, with corrosion-resistant parts. Entry-level reels are fine for ponds and occasional trips; mid-range reels add smoother drags and better seals; premium reels are lighter, stronger and built for heavy, repeated use.

Care

After every trip in salt or brackish water, rinse the reel gently with fresh water (do not blast it), dry it and loosen the drag before storage. A drop of reel oil on the handle knobs and line roller now and then keeps it smooth. Store it away from sand and damp.

Common questions

What is the best fishing reel size for beginners in India?

A 2500 to 3000 size spinning reel is a practical first reel. It suits pond fishing, light lures and small sea fish, and fits most 6 to 7 ft spinning rods.

Spinning or baitcasting reel: which should I buy?

Start with a spinning reel. Baitcasting reels are excellent for accurate casting with heavier lures, but they take practice. Many anglers add one later for murrel, barramundi or heavy lure fishing.

Can I use a freshwater reel in the sea?

Only with care. Salt corrodes unsealed parts quickly, so rinse it after every trip. For regular sea fishing, a reel made for saltwater lasts much longer.
